This class was similar to the earlier Oberon class but of a larger length and further improvements, they had a raked stem (bows) and a shield was provided for the 4 inch gun.

Four of this class, Poseidon, Perseus, Proteus and Pandora set out for the China Station in 1930. Submarines at this time were based at Wei Hai Wei on the North-east coast of the Chinese Province of Shantung.

Pandora and Parthian were participants of the 'Magic Carpet' run supplying Malta with essential stores during the blockade of the island.

Proteus was the only surviving boat of this class at the end of WWII.
